What the water bill calculator measures

This water bill calculator does one thing: it works out how much money your water and sewage actually cost for a month, a year, or any billing period you choose. It has nothing to do with how much water your body needs to drink each day — if that’s what you’re after, that’s a completely different topic (we have a separate calculator for it). This one is purely about the money on your water bill: usage × price per m³, plus any standing charge.

You can start from either side. Household size mode — enter how many people live in the household and how many litres one person uses per day; that’s the fast route, because litres per person per day is exactly the unit national water-usage statistics are published in. Bill mode — enter your usage straight from a meter reading or an invoice, in cubic metres or litres, for a month or a year. Both paths return the same set of results: cost per day, month and year, usage in m³ and litres per person per day, plus a breakdown of cost into water, sewage and standing charge.

The advanced options cover things an electricity bill doesn’t have: a separate price for water and a separate one for sewage (because that’s how most real bills are structured), a standing charge that applies regardless of usage, no sewer connection (septic tank or treatment plant), a sub-meter for garden irrigation, a tiered tariff with up to three usage bands (the norm in Spain), and unmetered billing with no meter at all (common for some UK households). How to use the water bill calculator

Start by picking your country — it sets the currency, the suggested VAT rate, and the average comparison figure for water use per person.

Household size mode:

How water cost is calculated: the formula

The core formula has three parts:

usage cost = volume of water (m³) × (water price per m³ + sewage price per m³), plus a standing charge that applies no matter how much water you actually use.

Step-by-step example

Take a 3-person household using 100 litres per person per day, over a 30-day month, at a water price of 5.90 PLN/m³ and a sewage price of 9.00 PLN/m³ (an illustrative rate from Warsaw’s water utility, MPWiK, in force 12 July 2025 – 10 July 2026 — see below), plus a standing charge of 8.00 PLN a month.

  1. Daily usage: 3 people × 100 L = 300 L = 0.3 m³/day.
  2. Monthly usage: 0.3 m³ × 30 days = 9 m³.
  3. Usage cost: 9 m³ × (5.90 + 9.00) PLN = 9 × 14.90 = 134.10 PLN.
  4. Total cost: 134.10 + 8.00 = 142.10 PLN a month.

That’s exactly what the calculator does — only the input numbers change. Enter the same usage straight from a bill instead (9 m³, or 9,000 litres, for the month) and you get the identical result — the unit doesn’t matter, the calculator converts it automatically.

Water and sewage are two separate prices — usually

In Poland and the UK, a water bill almost always splits the price into two separate line items: a price for the water you draw from the mains, and a price for the sewage you send down the drain, both charged per m³. Spanish operators more often publish one combined price covering supply, distribution and treatment together — in that case, just enter 0 as the sewage price and the whole rate as the water price; the result comes out mathematically identical.

Sometimes you only pay for one of the two. A household with its own well, but connected to the municipal sewer, pays only for sewage. The other way round — a house with its own septic tank or treatment plant, drawing mains water — pays only for water: in the calculator, just turn off “I’m connected to the sewer network” and the sewage cost drops out entirely. Example: 10 m³ a month, water at 5.90 PLN/m³, no sewer connection, a standing charge of 5.00 PLN — the cost is 10 × 5.90 = 59.00 PLN plus the 5.00 PLN charge, so 64.00 PLN a month, with nothing for sewage.

A related case is a garden irrigation sub-meter — if you have a separate meter for watering the lawn, that water never reaches the sewer, so it shouldn’t be billed as sewage. At 12 m³ a month, of which 2 m³ went on the garden, at 5.90 PLN/m³ (water) and 9.00 PLN/m³ (sewage): the water cost is 12 × 5.90 = 70.80 PLN, and the sewage cost is calculated on the remaining 10 m³ only: 10 × 9.00 = 90.00 PLN. Total: 160.80 PLN a month — 18 PLN less than if all 12 m³ were billed for sewage too.

Tiered tariffs, standing charges and unmetered billing

In Spain, tiered (progressive) tariffs are the norm — the price per m³ rises in steps as you use more, usually across 2–3 bands. The calculator handles up to three tiers: the first X m³ at one price, the next band at a higher price, and so on — the calculation is cumulative, so the first tier is always billed at its own, lower rate, no matter how much you go on to use above it.

An example based on Madrid’s Canal de Isabel II winter tariff (in force from 1 June 2025, actually billed every two months — here shown as a simplified monthly equivalent to illustrate the mechanism): tier 1 — up to 20 m³ at €0.3054/m³, tier 2 — above 20 m³ at €0.6103/m³. At 30 m³ for the month: the first 20 m³ × 0.3054 = €6.108, the next 10 m³ × 0.6103 = €6.103, totalling €12.211, plus a €3.00 standing charge — €15.21 for the month. With three tiers (say 0–20 m³ at €0.30, 20–40 m³ at €0.60, above 40 m³ at €0.90) and 50 m³ used: 20×0.30 + 20×0.60 + 10×0.90 = 6 + 12 + 9 = €27.00. Usage above the highest defined tier is always billed at that top tier’s rate.

A standing charge applies regardless of usage — even at zero consumption (an empty flat, say), you still pay it in full. At a standing charge of 21.50 PLN a month and zero usage, the bill still comes to exactly 21.50 PLN.

In the UK, roughly a quarter of households in England and Wales still have no water meter at all — they pay a fixed annual rateable-value charge that’s completely independent of actual usage. For those households, the calculator has a separate mode: enter the amount straight from the bill, with no conversion from usage at all. Example: a £375-a-year flat charge works out to £31.25 a month — there’s no m³ figure behind it, because in this mode there’s simply nothing to convert.

What water actually costs, and how much we use: Poland, the UK, Spain

One caveat before the numbers: water prices are hyperlocal. Unlike electricity, where Poland has a single nationally regulated reference tariff, water is supplied by a different local utility in every city, each with its own tariff approved for a 3-year period — Warsaw’s price differs from Poznań’s, and in the UK and Spain, regional prices can differ by a factor of two or more. The figures below are examples, not universal rates — always enter the price from your own bill.

  • Warsaw (MPWiK), tariff in force 12 July 2025 – 10 July 2026: water 5.90 PLN/m³, sewage 9.00 PLN/m³ (gross).
  • Yorkshire Water (UK), 2025/26 charging year: water £2.1195/m³, sewage £2.462/m³, plus standing charges of £50.54/year (water) and £107.26/year (sewage, including surface water drainage). Water and sewerage are zero-rated for VAT in the UK.
  • Canal de Isabel II (Madrid), winter tariff from 1 June 2025: €0.3054/m³ up to 20 m³ per two-month billing period, €0.6103/m³ above that — a single combined rate, with no separate sewage line.

Average per-person usage also varies by country: 94.2 litres a day in Poland (national statistics office GUS, 2023 data), 139 litres in the UK (Consumer Council for Water), and 128 litres in Spain (INE, 2024 data). The calculator compares your usage against this average automatically — for example, 300 litres a day per person in Poland comes out at roughly 318% of the national average, which alone is a good reason to check for a dripping tap or a leaking cistern.

How much does 1 m³ of water cost in Poland, the UK and Spain?

There’s no single answer — water prices are hyperlocal and depend on the utility, city or region. As one example, Warsaw’s MPWiK (2025/2026 tariff) charges 5.90 PLN/m³ for water and 9.00 PLN/m³ for sewage, while the UK’s Yorkshire Water charges £2.12/m³ for water and £2.46/m³ for sewage. These are illustrative examples, not universal rates — the exact price is on your own bill, and that’s the number worth entering into the calculator.

What’s the difference between the water charge and the sewage charge?

What is unmetered water billing in the UK?

It’s a system used by some UK households with no water meter — you pay a fixed annual charge (based on the property’s rateable value) regardless of how much water you actually use. In the calculator, switch on unmetered mode and enter the amount straight from your bill; the per-person usage comparison doesn’t apply here, since there’s no real usage figure behind the charge.

I have my own well or septic tank — do I still pay for sewage?

It depends what you’re connected to. A private well plus a municipal sewer connection means you pay for sewage only. A private septic tank or treatment plant plus mains water means you pay for water only. In the calculator, turn off “I’m connected to the sewer network” if you don’t pay for sewage — that cost drops out of the total completely.

Why is my water bill so high?

The usual culprits: more people in the household than usual, watering the garden, a leaking tap or a running cistern (these can waste water around the clock without you noticing), or a tariff change from your utility. If the calculator shows your per-person usage well above the national average, that’s worth checking — a tap dripping once a second adds up to a surprising number of litres a day.

How can I lower my water usage and bill?

Shorter showers instead of baths, running the washing machine and dishwasher only with a full load, fixing dripping taps and running cisterns (usually the biggest hidden source of waste), and using collected rainwater for the garden instead of mains water. You can test any of these changes straight away by adjusting your usage per person in the calculator, or by adding a garden irrigation sub-meter.
